Neighborly Basics

<aside> <img src="/icons/report_gray.svg" alt="/icons/report_gray.svg" width="40px" /> What does it mean to be Neighborly?

Neighborly is the disposition to live and behave on good terms with those who live nearby and to be generally helpful on principle.

Neighborly is an easy to use dashboard for getting to know your neighbors while tracking your relationships with them. At its simplest level you can track just information such as names, and phone numbers. At the deepest level you can track political affiliations, religious ideologies, likes, dislikes, and information required for long lasting relationships.

Getting Started with Neighborly

Get started by clicking +New in the Neighbors panel, then simply fill in as little or as much information as you wish. Enter everyone you know if you’d like, people near or far. Once you have your neighbors entered, you can start fine tuning the entries by adding more information based on what you know of them. Try Entering the following based on how much, or how little you know.

Partners, Children and Pets

For Partners, simply create a new Neighbor, and link them with an existing Neighbor. Jot down children’s names and pet breeds and names if needed.

In General

Many information fields are free form, you can put whatever you like in them. There is no need for granular data if you know a neighbor lives “3 doors down”, or drives a “blue truck”. Just enter the simple things that jog your memory. Enter just the amount of information you need to make Neighborly useful.

More Data

Political Ideology

Tracking religious affiliation can be useful when visiting neighbors, or having them over to your home. You can avoid or create situations by keeping track of their beliefs, habits and foods.

Music

Keep track of music genres that your neighbors listen to.

The Details

<aside> <img src="/icons/report_gray.svg" alt="/icons/report_gray.svg" width="40px" /> Want to stay in touch and be nice? Track the following information.

Visits

Use Neighborly to track visits and interactions with your neighbors. When you create a Visit record, you can note the Outcome. Was it a positive or negative event? What you choose effects the Neighborly Meter. If it’s been awhile since you have visited people Neighborly will let you know, maybe take them something nice. Keep Notes about visits on each page.

Friendship Level

You can track the 5 levels of friendship with your neighbors, and adjust them over time.

Alignment (D&D)

You can note the ethical and moral perspective of your neighbors in the Alignment field to give you a general idea of the type of person they are.

Birthdays / Gifts

If you know the birthdate of neighbors you can see who has upcoming birthdays, shown daily, weekly, and monthly as they approach. You can add new gift ideas and events, and associate them to any number of neighbors.

Lending/Borrowing

If you lend tools to neighbors, or borrow them, simply enter them into the Loaned or Borrowed panels along with the date. Neighborly will show you how long something has been loaned or borrowed so you don’t forget. Check Returned when the item is back where it belongs.

How to use Neighborly

<aside> <img src="/icons/report_gray.svg" alt="/icons/report_gray.svg" width="40px" /> That’s entirely up to you. You can do as little or as much as you like with Neighborly.

Use it as a journal or diary to write down your Adventures in Gardening with a close friend. Open a Neighbors page, scroll to the bottom and just start writing in the Journal area. Add Notes to Visits pages.

If you live in an established neighborhood, and already know everyone and everything about them, simply use it as a reminder tool for birthdays and gift ideas.

If you’re the new kid on the block, or the high rise, or the college dorm, and everyone is a stranger, start small. Names and digits, then go from there, handy if you forget names easily.

In the end, all I ask is that you use it as I envisioned it, something to make the world a tiny bit nicer, and easier to manage.

Once you’re comfortable using Neighborly, feel free to remove the Instructional Toggles on each view to streamline your experience.

Just remember, Neighborly is a simple, experimental tool for good. Do not use it maliciously.

Enjoy! Ian
